10/8/12

1. Review Enzymes
2. Energy and Enzymes Prelab

H.W. Finish the following in preparation for tomorrow's Energy and Enzymes Lab
  1. Open the Energy and Enzymes Lab document
  2. Write the heading Pre-lab questions.  Under the heading answer the 6 prelab questions on your separate sheet of paper.  Answer ALL of the questions in complete sentences.
  3. Write the heading Hypothesis: THEN, WRITE AN “IF___________ (independent/manipulated variable), THEN_________________ (observed results/dependent variable), BECAUSE_____________(something scientific based on the intro/background research)” STATEMENT TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ( I have included an example for the 1st one to help you)
    1. What effect does catalase have on the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide?                                Ex. If catalase is used during the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide, then it will speed up the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide causing lots of bubbles and temperature change because catalase is the enzyme that is specific to increasing the rate at which hydrogen peroxide breaks down.
    2. What effect does a very high temperature have on catalase’s ability to breakdown hydrogen peroxide?
    3. What effect does a cold temperature have on catalase’s ability to break down hydrogen peroxide?
    4. What effect does a change in pH have on catalase’s ability to breakdown hydrogen peroxide?
    5. What effect does an increase in substrate (hydrogen peroxide) have on the rate of the reaction (as measured by a change in temperature and bubble production)?
  4.   Write the heading Procedure.  Then read the procedure and then on your separate sheet of paper draw 6 test tubes.  Label the test tubes #1-6.  Under each test tube write down what you will be placing in the test tube and what you will be measuring.
